The F4U-4 Corsair from FMS brings one of the most iconic classic fighter aircraft to the sky in a handy 1100-mm scale. The fuselage and wings are made of sturdy EPO rigid foam, and the model is powered by a 4S brushless system with a scale 4-blade propeller. Landing flaps, a spring-loaded metal landing gear, and numerous scale details make the Corsair a warbird that impresses both visually and in flight.
The Vought F4U Corsair is one of the most famous carrier-based fighter aircraft in aviation history. After its maiden flight in 1940, it saw action in World War II and later in the Korean War, making a name for itself with its high speed, excellent climb performance, and massive firepower. Its characteristic inverted swept-back wing was born out of the need to provide sufficient ground clearance for the massive propeller without having to make the landing gear excessively long. Among its enemies, the Corsair earned the nickname “Whistling Death” because of the distinctive sound of its air intakes. The F4U-4 is one of the latest and most powerful variants in the series.
With a wingspan of 1,100 mm and a length of 880 mm, the Corsair remains easy to transport without compromising on accuracy to the original. The inverted swept-back wing, finely engraved panel lines, and the auxiliary fuel tanks mounted beneath the wings give the model the original’s distinctive silhouette. The pitot tube on the wing rounds out the scale appearance, and the integrated lighting system ensures a realistic look and good visibility even at dusk.
Propulsion is provided by a 3536-KV750 brushless motor with a 40-A ESC, paired with a 4S LiPo battery. The thrust-to-weight ratio exceeds 1:1, so the Corsair is not only fast and energetic but also masters vertical maneuvers and powerful climbs. The scale-accurate 4-blade propeller enhances the model’s appearance and, combined with the 4S power, generates noticeable motor torque that responds to precise rudder inputs.
The inverted swept-wing design acts like a natural V-shape and ensures stable flight characteristics during straight-line flight and in turns. At the same time, the model remains a warbird and responds directly and agilely to control inputs. Large loops, swift rolls, and split-S maneuvers are just as much a part of its repertoire as fast flybys, while the six 9-g servos ensure precise control responses.
The functional landing flaps allow for a realistic landing approach and significantly reduced landing speeds. The retractable landing gear retracts into the wing after takeoff, giving the Corsair the clean silhouette of the original in flight. As a classic tailwheel aircraft, the model takes off and lands true to the original from the ground; the spring-loaded metal landing gear legs absorb shocks and ensure a smooth rollout even on uneven runways.
